The winter solstice is not only the 22nd solar term among the twenty-four solar terms but also a traditional festival in my country. There is a folk saying that “the winter solstice is as big as the new year”. “Han Shu,” says: “The yang energy of the winter solstice rises, and the king is in charge, so he congratulates you.” The world believes that the winter solstice is an auspicious day blessed by God, so they congratulate each other and entertain each other with joy, which is more lively than the New Year. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, the emperor personally held a ceremony to pray for good weather and prosperity for the family and everything in the coming year.
WINTER SOLSTICE
Winter Solstice Customs
There is a saying among the people that “the winter solstice is as big as the new year”. This is not unfounded. The winter solstice was the new year in ancient times, and various customs of the winter solstice are still preserved across the country. In many places, the emphasis on the winter solstice is second only to the Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival.
WINTER SOLSTICE
After the winter solstice, the days will become longer day by day
The winter solstice is the shortest day in the whole year. The winter solstice and the summer solstice are exactly opposite. One day is the shortest and the other is the longest. They all turn around here and wax and wane. In the farmer’s proverb, noodles seem to be eaten on these two special days. “If you eat noodles on the summer solstice, one day will be shorter.” “If you eat winter solstice noodles, one day will be longer.”
Take a break from farming to recuperate your energy
During the winter solstice, when the grass and trees wither and the fields become cold, it is a time for farming to take a break and all things to recuperate and prepare for the coming spring. Only the green onions in the vegetable garden of the base are still fresh, including garlic which can survive freezing, and onions that can survive drying. Spring onions are more frost-resistant. Spinach, cabbage, and coriander are also cold vegetables that are frost-resistant. There is a saying that “cabbage beats mutton when frost hits it.”
During the winter solstice, dumplings are eaten in the north and glutinous rice balls are cooked in the south
There is a poem by the ancients: “Every family pounded rice to make glutinous rice balls, knowing that it was the winter solstice in the Ming Dynasty.” The glutinous rice balls are also called “winter solstice dumplings.” There is also a saying in the north that “If you don’t bring dumpling bowls during the winter solstice, your ears will freeze off and no one will care”. There is also a small fried flour dish shaped like an ear, which is called a “cat’s ear”. As the old saying goes, you won’t get chilblains if you eat your ears. On this day, the family gathers together and eats steaming meals. No matter the weather is cold or the wind and snow are biting, as long as the hearts are together, there is infinite warmth.
Three seasons of winter solstice
During the winter solstice, “earthworm knots” appear. At this time, the earthworms in the ground were still curled up like a knotted rope.
During the second lunar month of the winter solstice, the “elkhorn solution” occurs. When elk antlers fell off during the winter solstice, the ancients believed that this was a sign of the first return of yang energy and the beginning of a new cycle of life.
During the third period of the winter solstice, “water springs are moving”. After the winter solstice, the well water begins to rise and the spring water begins to flow.
Let’s count nine together
一九二九不出手;
三九四九冰上走;
五九六九,沿河插柳;
烦恼统统溜走;
疾病不敢存留;
The winter solstice is the first day of “Nine Counting”. “Nine Counting” is a very interesting winter calendar. In addition to recording the days, it can also record the weather and mood. Let’s do it with our children.
The teacher took the children to fill in the “Nine-nine Plum Blossoms to Relieve the Cold”. Every nine days is a “nine”. First, draw ten plum blossoms on the branches, a total of eighty-one petals. Starting from the winter solstice, they will dye one with a red pen every day. If the petals are all dyed red, then ninety-nine will be gone, and spring is coming. There is also a simpler Nine-Nine Cold Drawing, which involves drawing nine grids vertically and horizontally on a piece of paper, and drawing a circle in the middle of each grid, which is called “drawing copper coins”. There are eighty-one coins in total, and one coin is painted every day. The method is sung according to the folk song: “When it’s overcast and clear and snowy, you have to distinguish between the left wind and the right rain; all nine nines and eighty-ones are counted, and the spring returns to the earth and the grass is green.” It means that after painting these circles, it is “out of nine” spring.
During the winter solstice, we also carried out many creative activities with the children, including singing children’s songs and rhymes, making handmade solar terms bookmarks, playing dumpling squat games, etc. Although it was a cold winter day, the classroom was filled with enthusiasm and warmth. The children were full of creative passion and showed their love and respect for traditional culture during the activities; the teachers also expressed that they benefited a lot, not only reliving the cultural connotation and historical origins of the Winter Solstice with the children but also experiencing it personally Participate in solar terms activities and feel the charm and vitality of traditional culture with your children during the activities
“Nine-Nine Songs”
No action in 1929;
3949 ice walking;
5969, planting willows along the river;
The river opens in seventy-nine months, and the wild geese come in eighty-nine years.
Nine-nine plus one-nine, cattle are everywhere
“Jiujiu Song”: vividly records the changes in climate and phenology, and also explains some laws of agricultural activities.
The winter solstice is as big as the new year,
A small reunion in the world.
wish everyone
The more happiness I count, the more “nines” I get.
All worries slip away;
The more you count, the longer your health will be.
Disease dares not persist;
Nine on the winter solstice, may happiness last forever!
