Lunar New Year’s Day

Author: Song Wang Anshi – Politician from the Song Dynasty.

With the sound of firecrackers, the spring breeze sent warmth to Tusu.

Thousands of families always exchange new peaches for old ones.

一首朗朗上口的古诗把我们带回了——宋代，感受古人们是怎样过年的。

A catchy ancient Song Dynasty poem tells us how previous generations celebrated the New Year.

元旦的节日传说

传说在4000多年前远古的尧舜盛世之时，尧天子在位时勤政于民为百姓办了很多好事，很受广大百姓爱戴，但因其子无才不太成器，他没把“天子”的皇位传给自己的儿子，而是传给了品德才能兼备的舜。

尧对舜说：“你今后一定要把帝位传交好，待我死后也可安心瞑目了。”后来舜把帝位传给了治洪水有功的禹，禹亦像舜那样亲民爱民为百姓做了很多好事，都十分受人爱戴。

后来人们把尧死后，舜帝祭祀天地和先帝尧的那一天，当作一年的开始之日，把正月初一称为“元旦”，或“元正”，这就是古代的元旦。

There is a legend that during the heyday of Yao and Shun more than 4,000 years ago, Emperor Yao did a lot of good things for the people when he was ruling.

He was very popular among the people, but because his son was incompetent, he was not very effective.

He passed the throne to his son, but passed it on to Shun, who has both character and ability. Yao said to Shun: “You must pass on the throne well in the future, and you can look at me with peace of mind after I die.”

Later, Shun passed the throne to Yu, who had done well in flood control. Yu also loved the people and the people like what Shun did. Later, after Yao’s death, the Emperor Shun sacrificed to heaven and earth. Xiandi Yao was regarded as the beginning of the year and the first day of the first month was called “New Year’s Day”, or “Yuanzheng”, which is the ancient New Year’s Day.

1911年辛亥革命成功后，决定采用国际通行的公历，于是将农历元旦改为“春节”，而把公历的1月1日称为元旦。新中国成立之时，开始正式使用“公元纪年法”，把每年公历的1月1日定为元旦。

“元旦”的“元”，指开始，是第一的意思，凡数之始称为“元”；“旦”，象形字，上面的“日”代表太阳，下面的“一”代表地平线。“旦”即太阳从地平线上冉冉升起，象征一日的开始。人们把“元”和“旦”两个字结合起来，就引申为新年开始的第一天。

After the success of the Revolution in 1911, it was decided to adopt the international Gregorian calendar. The Lunar New Year’s Day was changed to “Spring Festival”, and January 1 of the Gregorian calendar was called New Year’s Day.

When the People’s Republic of China was founded, the “A.D. chronology” was officially used, and January 1 of the Gregorian calendar was designated as New Year’s Day.

The “Yuan” in “New Year’s Day” means the beginning. The beginning of all numbers is called “Yuan”; “Dan” is a pictogram. The upper part of the “day” character represents the sun and the lower “一” represents the horizon.

“Dan” means the sun rises from the horizon, symbolizing the beginning of a day. People combine the words “Yuan” and “Dan” to extend it to the first day of the new year.
