过去这二十年里，我在不同的蒙特梭利环境工作过。与孩子共处的每一天让我的教学旅程充满喜悦与欢乐。许多孩子给我留下了深刻的印象，他们已离开我的课堂，但我仍常常想念。
我知道他们在往后的日子里会做得很好，缘于他们拥有的优势与个性，而我一直那么幸运，很多孩子长大以后还回来探望我。让我对他们的幸福与个人成长的期望一直都能得到证实。他们当中有些人在世界名校里上大学，而有些更早前的学生甚至都有了自己的孩子。
虽然他们有着各种不同的关于蒙特梭利记忆的故事可以述说，但有一件事是不变的——他们思念蒙特梭利教室里各种不同的工作，包括与自理和独立相关的所有物品，这些物品看起来不像“工作”，却是发展独立能力和自信的关键。
当我回顾以往经验时，在蒙特梭利教室的第一次点心时间依然历历在目。而我此生将会一直记得——那时在圣诞节期间，我去当地一所学校代课。作为节庆活动的一部分，孩子们吃的点心是姜饼和牛奶。我是去帮忙的，所以本能地就去打开小牛奶罐，开始给大家倒牛奶。
我觉得我的行为看起来是很自然的，毕竟，我是大人而且是来班级帮忙照顾孩子的。可是当我倒牛奶时，一个三岁的小女孩瞪着蓝色的大眼睛看着我问道“为什么你要倒牛奶？”我心想这真是最奇怪的问题了，我甚至无从作答。
我嘴里嘟囔着因为我是大人所以帮忙倒牛奶。她用清晰的声音回答我“我们知道怎么倒牛奶，但还是很感谢你的帮助”。
她的回答在我心里留下了深刻的印象，我看孩子的视角也从此不同。我看到的这些人，在被允许和被适当帮助的情况下有能力完成好多事，而不是需要被照料的没有能力的人。就在那天，我真正理解了蒙特梭利的格言“帮助我让我动手自己做”。
I have worked in different Montessori environments over the past twenty years. My journey has been full of the joy and delight that comes with working everyday with children. Many of my children leave a deep impression on me and I often think about them after they have left my classroom.
While I know they will do well because of their strengths and personalities, I have been lucky in that many children have come back to visit me as they grow up. They consistently confirm my expectations for their happiness and personal growth. Some of them now study at prestigious universities around the world, while my older former students even have children of their own.
While they all have different stories to tell about their Montessori memories, one thing is constant — they remember fondly the different kinds of Montessori work from their classroom, including items related to self-care and independence that do not seem like “work” but are key for developing independence and confidence.
As I look back on my own experience, I vividly remember my first snack time in a Montessori room. I’ll remember it as long as I live — I went to substitute during Christmas break at a local school. As a part of the holiday festivities, the kids had gingerbread cookies and milk for their snack. I was there to help and so I instinctively took the tiny milk jug and started to pour milk for everyone.
My actions felt natural. After all, I was the adult and I was there to care for the children. While pouring the milk, a three-year-old girl looked at me with her big blue eyes: “Why are you pouring the milk?” I thought it was the weirdest thing to ask and I didn’t even know how to answer.
I mumbled something about pouring the milk because I was the adult. She replied with a clear voice: ”We know how to pour the milk ourselves but thank you very much for your help.”
Her reply left a deep impression in my mind and from that day I saw children in a different light. Instead of helpless people who need to be tended, I saw able individuals who can do so many things if they are allowed and helped in the right way. That was the day I came to truly understand the Montessori motto: “Help me to do it myself!”
