Time – a quarter to
Today we will focus on telling the time! We will look into using the vocabulary ‘a quarter to’ and then recap everything we’ve learned with our very own clock! First, let’s sing our song about time to let the children in the mood to learn about time!
We have learned about o’clock, quarter past and half past and now it’s time to learn a quarter to! Now the minute hand points at the number 9! The children need to focus on the hour hand as well and remember that when it is a quarter to 3, the hour hand does not quite point at three. Please watch the teaching video before making the clock for a practice!
Activity – make a clock at home!
What you will need (if you don’t use the worksheet)
White or light coloured A4 paper for the picture (I used 4 pieces of A4 paper)
White or coloured paper for the clocks hands
Coloured pens or pencils
Glue or tape
Scissors
A pan lid (or something circular)
What you will need (if you use the worksheet)
Two pieces of light coloured or white A4 pieces of paper to print the worksheet on
Coloured pens or pencils
Glue or tape
Scissors
How to make the clock
1) Take four pieces of paper and tape or glue them together. You can use less than four pieces or a large piece of paper if you would prefer.
2) Turn the paper over and place something circular on the paper and draw around it. This will ensure a perfect circle. I used a pan lid from the kitchen.
3) Write the numbers on the clock. To get the best result it is best to write 12, 3, 6 and 9 first and then fill in the rest of the numbers.
4) Write o’clock, a quarter past, half past and a quarter to in the correct places. (Image of my clock above)
5) Draw and then cut out two arrows like in my example. Make sure one is longer than the other and write ‘minute hand’ on the longer hand and ‘hour hand’ on the shorter hand.
6) Write their name and decorate as they want.
What to do?
Now each child has their very own personalized clock! This can be a wonderful revision and practice tool which they have made themselves. First, I would like the children to practice ‘a quarter to’ times and then once they are comfortable, revisit all the times they have learned. The children will need to move the minute hand and it is crucial they remember to move the hour hand as well! The final thing is that the children must speak the times out loud as they do it.
How can I help my child?
At first you can just practice to make sure that the four times have been understood. When your child is comfortable using the times then it is time for a story! You can make up a story which include times of the day and see if they can follow the story and move the hands to the correct times as you say them.
Example
It was a beautiful sunny day and suddenly Billy’s alarm clock went off – it was 6 o’clock! (move the hands of the clock)
Little Billy was a little bit sleepy and stayed in bed for 15 more minutes, it was now a quarter past 6! (move the hands of the clock)
Billy went downstairs and waited for his breakfast, his mother was still cooking. Today Billy is going to eat eggs for breakfast. His mother had finished cooking and gave him his breakfast at a quarter to 7! (move the hands of the clock)
This will make learning about different times a lot more fun and interactive. What will Billy do after his breakfast? You can ask your child to add to the story as well!
