处暑前后正值中元节，也叫做七月半，这个节日最早是上古祖先们的“农作丰收秋尝祭祖”的活动。在古时候，民间认为自己的祖先会在七月半返回家中探望子孙，所以有了祭祖的习俗。恰巧，“中元节”的祭祖仪式又赶上了小秋的农作物收获，所以这天的祭祀活动就成为了“农作丰收秋尝祭祖”，晚辈还要把把丰收的喜悦与祖先分享。此外，处暑之后，天气渐凉，秋意渐浓，天气由炎热向凉爽过渡，正是出行游玩的好季节。有道是“七八月里看巧云，纤云四卷，气爽秋高。”处暑过后，天上的云彩也不再像大暑时节那样浓云成块，变得疏散自如，大有一种迎接秋天到来之意。所以也就有了“出游迎秋”的说法。

处暑时节到来之后，农作物也即将成熟，古时候，民间庄稼的收成全靠天气，所以民间普遍比较迷信，往往将风调雨顺祈求于神明，于是这也就有了“拜土地爷”的习俗。古时候，每年处暑节气，农家百姓纷纷举行各种仪式来拜谢土地爷，有的杀牲口到土地庙祭拜，有的在田间插上旗幡表示对土地爷的感恩之情，还有的从田间干活回家后不洗脚，恐怕把好收成给洗掉，还有的将贡品撒进田地，然后烧纸祈福，并用剪成碎条的五色纸，缠绕在农作物的穗子上，以此保佑粮食大丰收。

老鸭味甘性凉，做法也五花八门，比如烤鸭、白切鸭、荷叶鸭、百合鸭、啤酒鸭等等，不但味道鲜美而且还能防治“秋燥”。有道是“七月半鸭，八月半芋”，古时候，民间就有处暑吃鸭子的习俗，这个习俗一直流传至今。在我国江苏地区还有处暑送鸭子的习俗，正所谓“处暑送鸭，无病各家”，处暑时节，将做好的鸭子赠予亲朋邻里，相互间表达美好的祝愿。

因为处暑期间的气候特点是白天热，早晚凉，昼夜温差大，降水少，空气湿度低。在这样的环境下，人容易出现口鼻干燥，咽干唇焦的燥症，所以就有每到处暑时节，家家户户煎药茶的习俗。
药茶是事先到药店配好的药方，有清热、去火、消食、除肺热等功效。每当处暑时节，家家户户都会煎茶备饮，同时，也寓意着入秋要吃点“苦头”的意思。
