Education is not the filling of a pail,
but the lighting of a fire.
“Matches for a penny?” Her raspy voice dissolved in the wind.
As church bells chimed eight o’clock, she sank into an alley corner. Rubbing her purple-tinged fingers, she struck a match against the stone wall. Hssst! A warm glow bloomed like a miniature sun.
In the flame danced a cast-iron stove, its belly glowing orange. She reached toward the heat – pfft – the match died, leaving her clutching blackened wood.
The second match revealed a holiday feast: crackling pork, honey-glazed apples, and a pudding crowned with holly. As the vision faded, the afterimage of a steaming roast lingered on her frostbitten eyelids.
“Grandmama?” The girl’s breath hitched. “Take me with you! Don’t disappear like the stove and the feast!”
Clutching her remaining matches, the child struck the entire bundle. The blaze outshone the Northern Star as Grandmama’s form solidified, lifting the girl into a hug that melted the ice in her bones. Together they ascended where cold and hunger couldn’t follow.
Dawn revealed a small corpse smiling at the sky, charred matches scattered around her. Passersby clucked, “Poor thing tried to warm herself.” None saw the celestial lights still dancing in her unblinking eyes.
