The “Greater Cold” is the last solar term of the twenty-four solar terms in our country. After the “Greater Cold’, the new year’s solar cycle comes to an end. Although the weather still is cold at this time, it will not be as cold as the winter solstice because it is almost spring.
At this time, people are busy changing the old things with new ones. Preparing new year dishes and getting ready for the new year with different kind of goods.
There are many important folk customs and festivals. Such as the end of the festival with a sumptuous dinner. The New Year’s Eve and the largest festival in China, the Spring Festival, is also in this solar term.
The “Greater Cold” solar term is full of joy and happiness. It is cheerful and relaxed, because it is the most important festival for Chinese people: the Spring Festival is approaching. There is also a very important day for the northern part of China – The Laba Festival, which is the eighth day of twelfth lunar month. This day, people use whole grains, peanuts, chestnuts, red dates, lotus seeds, etc. to make a pot of sweet and delicious Laba porridge, which is an indispensable food for people during the New Year.
Because the “Greater Cold” meets “Lichun”, the food also adapts to the season change. The amount of food for the cold is gradually reduced, and more food with uplifting properties, such as ginger, onions, mustard greens, white radishes, peppers, garlic, etc., are added to adapt to the spring. In the South of China, there is a custom of eating glutinous rice. The glutinous rice is sweet and warm by nature. These food has the effect of keeping the cold away.
In Beijing, the custom of eating “Xiao Han Gao” has a long history. ” Xiao Han Gao ” is a kind of rice cake. After eating it, the whole body feels warm. It has the effects of warming up the wind, nourishing the lungs and strengthening the spleen and stomach. Moreover, people choose to eat rice cakes on the day of “big cold”, which also means “young old”. Therefore, as an old Beijing tradition, families eat rice cakes, which not only has auspicious flavor, but also can expels the cold from the body, so it is called ” Xiao Han Gao “
Greater Cold and Lesser Cold are the coldest days of the year. Wear more clothes to keep you body warm. If the weather is good also try skating. Children will also experience the fun of skating with their families!
